Who are Peer Helpers?

Peer Helpers are Year 5 students trained in basic counselling skills by the counsellors at the Raffles Guidance Centre under the Peer Helpers Programme. Besides basic counselling skills, Peer Helpers are also trained in the basics of mental illnesses.

What is Peer Helping?

A conscious act of supporting an individual through his/her problems via active listening.

Who can speak to a Peer Helper?

Anyone!

What can I expect from a relationship with a Peer Helper?

You can expect a safe space where you can share your problems with the Peer Helper (all issues will be kept confidential except in a life-threatening situation) who will listen not with the intention to give advice, but to understand.

What is the difference between speaking to a Peer Helper and a friend?

While speaking to a Peer Helper and a friend share a lot of similarities, Peer Helpers have a commitment to listen actively with the necessary attention and time required – qualities which a friend may not always have.

Some of us may also find it easier to speak to a Peer Helper if the matter at hand is a more sensitive one that one would prefer not to share with one’s friends.

I’m more comfortable with speaking to a Peer Helper of my own gender. Can I do that?

Sure! Just let us know your preferences in the form below and we’ll try our best to meet them.

Why would a student prefer a Peer Helper than a counsellor?

Usually people find it more comfortable to speak to someone of their age. Additionally, some people may find their issues not serious enough as to warrant a session with the counsellor. That being said, don’t worry about whether your problem is serious enough if you wish to speak to a counsellor instead – they will be more than happy to hear you out and your own preferences do come first!
